In June 2014, SAD detected 843 square kilometers of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon with a cloud cover of 30% over the territory. That represented a 358% increase in relation to June 2013 when deforestation totaled 184 square kilometers and cloud cover was at 12%.
The deforestation accumulated during the period of August 2013 to June 2014, corresponding to the first eleven months of the current deforestation calendar, totaled 1,690 square kilometers. There was a 9% reduction in accumulated deforestation in relation to the previous period (August 2012 to June 2013) when deforestation totaled 1,855 square kilometers.
In June 2014, the majority (54%) of deforestation occurred in Pará, followed by Amazonas (16%), Rondônia (15%), Mato Grosso (14%) and Acre (1%).
Degraded forests totaled 48 square kilometers in June 2014. In relation to June 2013, when forest degradation totaled 169 square kilometers, there was a decrease of 71%. The majority (44%) occurred in Pará Grosso, followed by Rondônia (40%), Mato Grosso (13%) and Amazonas (2%).
Forest degradation accumulated during the period of August 2013 to June 2014 totaled 614 square kilometers. There was a 58 % reduction in relation to the previous period (August 2012 to June 2013) when forest degradation totaled 1,462 square kilometers.
